The U3A IT group will not be meeting for 2 weeks because of Easter holidays. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, 30th April at 11:00am when Christine will be showing us how to manipulate digital photos.

We have reminded group members on several occasions about scam telephone calls purporting to be from the Microsoft help desk or technical department. We are aware of several expats in the valley who have fallen for this recently and given the callers access to their PCs via ‘Remote Assistance’, along with their bank details. Please spread the word that, no matter how much information the callers appear to know about you and how plausible the story, Microsoft will never call you in this way – they cannot monitor what you are doing or the state of your PC.

Partly as a result of the above, plans are being made to hold an Internet Safety Seminar in the near future and also to start another Beginnners’ group. If you are interested in either of these, please email me, together with the names and contact details of any friends you may want to bring along.

If you have an suggestions for future topics you would lke to see us cover in the IT group, please let me know.

We were informed today when we returned the keys to the ayuntamiento that next Wednesday is a fiesta day and that we cannot use the meeting room at Bar Crue.

On 26th March, we will start to cover the popular and much requested downloading of films and music using Torrent software, watching TV on your laptop/PC, how to watch ITV/BBC iPlayer in Spain and other entertainment related subjects.

Next Wednesday, 26th February, we will be continuing with our tools to help you with your finances, explaining in more detail how to set up the columns and calculations to compare income and expenditure from pensions and finances according to inflation and growth rates.

By popular request on Wednesday 5th March, we will be looking at tablets – how to use them and how to transfer onto them data such as photos and documents from your PC or laptop, how to download ebooks, etc.

This week we’ll be exploring ways in which you can use freely-available software to prepare simple comparisons of your investments, how long your pension will last, keeping track of your utility bills and so on – all vital to keep on top of your cost of living in Spain.

Vernon will be giving an informative talk entitled “Radio broadcasting – how I.T. helps me present radio programmes in UK from here in Spain” – illustrated with examples of the equipment he uses and excerpts from live and recorded programmes. He won’t be trying to show us how to do it but introducing tools and websites which may be useful.

Following Christine’s talk on YouTube, several people asked for an explanation of how to make videos or slideshows from digital photos and we will cover this subject very soon.

Next Wednesday, Christine will talking about YouTube, which is now a very popular source of videos. The number of members attending since the start of the new year has been encouraging but there is insufficient demand at this stage for a Beginners Group. However, this means we are able to run the one-on-one ‘doctor’s surgery’ for members with specific problems.

The subjects to be covered during February will include:

  • “Radio broadcasting – how IT helps me present radio programmes in UK from here in Spain” – a talk by Vernon, illustrated with examples of live and recorded programmes on Hospital Radio Basingstoke
  • YouTube – how to find, watch and download videos by Christine
  • Practical uses for spreadsheets
  • How to create an Access database of names and addresses

The following are the subjects we intend to cover in the U3A IT group during the first weeks of the New Year. We will try to keep to this timetable but it is not always possible to estimate accurately how long it will take to cover a particular topic.

We will start the new term with one joint group but will run a Beginners group later if there are sufficient new members.

January 15      Facebook – a Powerpoint presentation and a practical demonstration of some of the more popular aspects of this social media

January 22     Connecting devices to the internet and to each other – creating a home network. If you have more than one piece of IT equipment in your house, you will probably want to share a printer, access to your broadband router and even share files. We will try to explain simply how to achieve this

January 29     Continuing our explanation of home networks

Other subjects to be allocated a date:

Voice recognition on your PC/laptop

“Radio broadcasting – how IT helps me present radio programmes in UK from here in Spain” – a talk by Vernon, illustrated with examples of live and recorded programmes on Hospital Radio Basingstoke
